Layers, Layers, Layers
What is Layered Lighting?
Light layering doesn't need to be complicated. There are three elements to remember:
- Ambient Light: the foundational first layer that broadly illuminates a room, whether with a bold island pendant or subtle flush mount
- Task Light: focused illumination on frequent tasks such as reading and personal grooming
- Accent Light: a spotlight on artistic or architectural features, such as paintings or brickwork
A smart coordination of all three lets your clients shine a light exactly when and where you need it in any situation. Visit our in-depth guide for a deeper exploration of these elements!
How to Layer Furniture & Decor
Layering interior design can seem intimidating, with countless options for furniture and decor and almost no end of possible arrangements. Keeping to just the bare essentials can feel lackluster, but an overstuffed space is more cramped than cozy. The key to a welcoming space is to fill it with meaningful objects while avoiding clutter. Curate the plush, organic furnishings that soothe and comfort after a long day, but don't overwhelm your client with excess items.
Is that easier said than done? Maybe. But here are some tips:
- Think texture: soft goods like blankets, pillows, and area rugs add an aura of relaxation to any space
- Round out edges: organic curves add a visual softness even when they're made of firmer stuff - giving your client room to loosen up, too
- Neutral tones: your client’s favorite colors are obviously more than welcome, but consider incorporating warm, relaxing neutrals that lend themselves to any situation
